Using the A-Z Index

The A-Z Index feature allows you to search for index terms from the printed version of Historical Statistics of the United States Millennial Edition and view the essays and tables referenced by the terms you’ve searched for.

You can use either of the following options to find index terms:

To find index terms using alphabetical browsing:

  1. Click the Indexes tab. The A-Z Index section is displayed in the left pane, with a list of letters from A-Z and the Search Index field.

  2. Note: Only the letters for which index terms exist are displayed.

  3. Click the first letter of the term you are searching for. The heading 2nd Letter should now appear, followed by a list of letter pairs that match index terms.

  4. Click the appropriate letter pair: for example, Ag if you are searching for Agriculture. The top-level index terms that match the selected pair are displayed below the Search Index field.

  5. Click the index term you’re interested in. The list of essays and tables referenced by the selected index term is displayed in the right pane.

To search for index terms:

  1. Enter a few letters of your search term in the Search Index field. You can enter an asterisk (*) at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the search term to extend the search.  For example, searching for Air* will retrieve results for Air Force, Air quality, and Air transportation.

  2. Click Search. The top-level index terms in the printed index that match the search term are displayed below the Search Index field.

  3. Click an index term. The list of essays and tables referenced by the selected index term is displayed in the right pane.

Note: You can only search on terms present in the printed index of Historical Statistics of the United States Millennial Edition. To search the entire site, use the Search tab.
